Facts About Sexual Assault In North Dakota
JANUARY - DECEMBER 2000

752 primary victims and 374 secondary victims were served by 18 sexual assault crisis centers throughout ND.
At least 428 (57%) of primary victims were under the age of 18 years old at the time of the assaults.
At least 91% (686) of the victims were female.
At leat 94% (704) of the assailants were male.
At least 4% (32) of the assailants were female.
In at least 434 of the 752 (58%) cases, the crime was reported to law enforcement.
At least 45% (342) of the victims contacted a sexual assault center about the crime within 1 day - 1 month of the assault.
At least 87% (651) of the cases were male assailant/female victims.
At Least 7% (53) of the cases were male assailant/male victim.
At least 51% of the assaults were rape, 22% attempted rape, and 27% were sexual contact other than rape or attempted rape.
In at least 85% (638) of the cases the assailant was known to the victim.
In at least 33% (246) of the cases the assailant was a family member..
In at least 40% (300) of the cases the assailant was a friend/acquaintance/date of the victim.
At least 32% (242) of the cases were incest or indicated a history of incest.
At least 4,150 contacts were made between victims and sexual assault crisis advocates from January to December of 2000. 10,095 services were provided.
At least 61% of the assaults occurred in the victim's or assailant's home.
At least 51% (382) of the victims were referred to sexual assault service providers by themselves, friends, or family members. At least 16% (120) were referred by the criminal justice system.
953 calls to program hotlines were made.
133 training presentations were made to more than 2,812 professionals working with sexual assault issues.
827 public education presentations were made to more than 33,146 people from various groups within communities throughout ND.

Facts About Domestic Violence In North Dakota
JANUARY - DECEMBER 2000

3,789 new victims(new = unduplicated for the year) received services from crisis centers in North Dakota.
5,933 incidents of domestic violence were reported to crisis intervention centers in North Dakota.
At least 4,951 children were directly impacted by these incidents.
964 orders of protection were filed with the assistance of domestic violence program staff.
94% of the victims were women.
At least 37% of the victims were under the age of 30; At least 4% were under the age of 18.
10% of the new victims were disabled. Of those disabled, 37% were mentally ill and 58% were physically disabled.
Weapons were used in at least 18% of the cases identifieds. Guns were used in 23% of the cases involving weapons and knives were used in 27% of the cases involving weapons.
Law enforcement officers were called to respond in 47% of the incidents; In at least 37% of these incidents, an arrest was made.
Alcohol use by abuser only was indicated in 34% of the new cases.Alcohol use by both victim and offender was indicated in 10% of the cases.
The abuser had a history of abuse behavior with other adults in at least 37% of the cases.
Victims reported that 132 batterers violated their protection orders; 60 were arrested for a first violation and 34 were arrested for subsequent violations.
