Remarks
I left a little after 6:30 this morning. When I left the temperature was already in the mid 60s which is a nice change from what I experienced in the midwest. There wasn't much of anything between Lugoff and Saint Matthews except for a gas station about midway between the two towns. The shoulder on the road was still non-existant, but this day had to be my best day riding on roads with no shoulder. There was little traffic on this portion of US 601 which was very nice. The motorists were generally friendly today. I think I only got honked at once. Half the time I don't know if the honks are friendly or not. It's hard to say. As the day went on the temperature kept rising. By the time I reached Bamberg it was uncomfortably hot. I biked the last 32 miles without a shirt to try to take the heat a little better. When I got to my motel (Carolina Lodge), I turned on the Weather Channel to discover the heat index was around 105. No wonder I was so hot. This trip is sure a mix of contrasting weather. Everything from wind in North Dakota to rain and 40 and 50 degree weather in the midwest to sweltering heat in the south. I stopped at a Piggly Wiggly grocery store here and bought a box of six popsicles and ate all of them. Although the heat can be uncomfortable I'd take this anyday over the rainy, cold weather that stuck with me for a week. At least if it rains down here, I don't think I'll have to worry about getting too cold.
